Reconnecting & Finding Balance

I'm sure we all have them...the old friends who we keep in touch with via facebook and the occasional text message. They are fabulous and we don't want to cut ties with them but life has seemed to have gotten in the way of regular meet ups and truly connecting.

I have a few friends who fit the description above. It saddens me that we do not get to spend more time together but at the same time I understand that marriage, careers, and adult life in general make it hard to break free for dinner and drinks.

This morning I was able to escape my career, motherhood, and all of my other responsibilities and enjoy the company of a long time friend at a local cafe. It had been almost a year since our last date which is totally crazy seeing that we live in the same town.

It was so refreshing catching up with this friend. Our conversation had a entertaining mixture of nostalgia from our past and chit chat concerning our current lives. I am still reeling with "happy vibes" from my morning at the cafe.

My morning has gotten me thinking...why don't I allow this to happen more frequently? Is life truly so crazy that me and my dear friend can only see each other a couple times per year? I will not be hard on us because we do have very hectic lifestyles. Yet I do believe that taking the time to sit down with and old friend and just relax is extremely beneficial and even therapeutic.

So in the name of mental health I'd like to create a goal for myself. I'd like to commit to reconnecting once a month to a friend or family member who I still value but don't get to see enough. I am hoping that by posting my goal here it will hold me accountable for achieving it. It all comes down to balance; finding a healthy equilibrium between work and relaxation.

Wish me luck on my venture, I will keep you updated!

  6. I try to at least once a month do something with a friend. It's so nice to sit face to face and enjoy each others company. It's hard for us mom's to make time for ourselves. It is a practice that we fall out of.
